Candidate Glass Constructions for Helston Projects

Option 0117.52mm (8+1.52+8) – 21.52mm (10+1.52+10)

17.52mm or 21.52mm Toughened Laminated Frameless Juliet Glass

Best Suited For:Residential apartment French doors, hotel guestroom facade Juliet balconies, and inward-opening window guarding.
Engineering Trade-Offs:Point-fixed with marine-grade 316 stainless steel stand-off adaptors into masonry reveals; clean frameless aesthetic with full fall-from-height retention.
Option 0221.52mm – 25.52mm with SentryGlas Interlayer

21.52mm or 25.52mm Structural Ionoplast Rooftop Windbreak Parapet

Best Suited For:High-altitude commercial rooftop bars, penthouse terraces, and coastal restaurant viewing decks.
Engineering Trade-Offs:Provides 1.5m to 1.8m high windbreak shelter while maintaining structural stiffness against heavy coastal wind suction without a top rail.
Option 0310mm – 12mm Monolithic Toughened

10mm or 12mm Toughened Glass Post-and-Clamp Railing System

Best Suited For:Low-level garden terraces, commercial restaurant patio enclosures, and perimeter walkway railings.
Engineering Trade-Offs:Economical installation utilizing stainless steel baluster posts and D-clamps; requires continuous handrail if safeguarding an unguarded drop > 600mm.

Architectural Design & Safety Checklist

Confirm occupancy category to BS 6180 Table 2: Domestic / residential Juliet = 0.74 kN/m; Commercial terrace or bar = 1.5 kN/m line load.
Verify BS 6180:2011 Clause 6.4.1 deflection limits: Maximum top edge deflection <= 25mm under design service line load.
Perform high-altitude wind load calculations to BS EN 1991-1-4: Corner rooftop zones experience severe localized vortex suction forces (cpe,1 up to -2.8).
Detail base channel drainage weeps: Trapped rainwater inside outdoor base shoes causes freeze-thaw expansion and degrades laminated edge interlayers.
Specify Marine Grade 316 (A4) stainless steel fixings for all outdoor and coastal balcony adaptors to prevent galvanic corrosion.

Governing British & European Standards

BS 6180:2011 Barriers in and about buildings
Establishes minimum horizontal line loads (0.74 to 1.5 kN/m), concentrated point loads, and 25mm max deflection limit.
Approved Document K (Section 3)
Mandatory minimum barrier height: 1100mm for external balconies, rooftop terraces, and Juliet openings.
BS EN 12600 Class 1B1
Mandatory laminated safety impact containment for all frameless barriers protecting against falls from height.

Helston Site Logistics & Crane Handling

Lifting Equipment:Oversized panels require spider crane or vacuum lifter offloading.
Structural Substrate:Fixings into external brickwork must anchor into structural masonry or concrete lintels using certified chemical resin anchors (avoid fixing into outer brick skin alone).
Site Tolerances:Point-fixing standoff adaptors require precision laser alignment to prevent twisting stress across laminated glass plies.

Procurement Advice for Helston
