Architectural design guidance, candidate constructions, statutory Building Regulations, and local supplier procurement for Cardiff (Caerdydd).

Local Commercial Context & District Requirements in Cardiff

In Cardiff, executing specifications for commercial lifts & panoramic elevator enclosures across commercial zones like Cardiff Bay, Central Square, Callaghan Square, Civic Centre demands careful coordination with Cardiff Council (Building Regulations Wales) building control standards.

Local Authority & Statutory Oversight:Enforced under Cardiff Council (Building Regulations Wales) Building Control. In Wales, compliance follows Building Regulations (Wales).

Climatic Exposure & Acoustic Context:Severn Estuary coastal winds, high maritime salt air corrosion risks on exterior hardware, demanding marine-grade 316 stainless steel fixtures.

Technical Evaluation

Candidate Glass Constructions for Cardiff Projects

Option 0110.8mm – 13.52mm (e.g. 5+0.76+5 or 6+1.52+6)

Laminated Toughened Glass for Lift Car Enclosures

Best Suited For:Panoramic moving elevator car walls, observation cabins, and internal car ceiling panels.

Engineering Trade-Offs:High optical transparency and zero fragment spall during mechanical impact; requires strict edge clearance to prevent car frame racking stress.

Option 0228mm – 36mm High-Performance Acoustic & Solar IGU

Double Glazed Unitised Laminated Enclosure for External Shafts

Best Suited For:External panoramic lift towers on building exteriors subject to wind pressure and solar heat buildup.

Engineering Trade-Offs:Prevents lift car greenhouse overheating; requires integrated solar control coating and structural silicone joints resistant to atmospheric wind pumping.

Option 0316mm – 25mm EI30 or EI60 Intumescent Assembly

Certified Fire-Resistant Glazing for Lift Landing Doors

Best Suited For:Lift lobby landing doors and fire shaft compartment screens.

Engineering Trade-Offs:Restricts fire and toxic smoke spread between building levels; must be tested and certified strictly to BS EN 81-58 within specific lift landing door frames.

Architectural Design & Safety Checklist

Verify compliance with BS EN 81-20 Section 5.2.1.4.1: Glass lift walls must withstand 300N point load applied horizontally over 5cm² area without permanent deflection > 15mm.

Verify BS EN 81-20 Section 5.2.1.4.2 pendulum impact test: Lift car walls must withstand 50kg dual-tire pendulum shock from 700mm drop height without penetration or detachment.

Mandate laminated glass only: Monolithic toughened glass is strictly prohibited in lift cars below 2.5m elevation per BS EN 81-20.

Ensure lift landing door glass satisfies BS EN 81-58 fire resistance test standards for integrity (E) and insulation (EI).

Account for elevator car dynamic acceleration/deceleration forces and piston/cable air blast in sealed shafts.

Specify anti-pinch visual manifestation indicators and flush countersunk fixings to eliminate passenger snagging points.

Governing British & European Standards

BS EN 81-20:2020 & BS EN 81-50

Safety rules for lifts: mandatory mechanical 300N point load test and 50kg pendulum shock criteria for glass car walls.

BS EN 81-58

Fire resistance tests for lift landing doors, ensuring compartment separation across multi-storey shafts.

BS EN 12600 Class 1B1

Highest laminated containment classification preventing pane penetration under 50kg pendulum drop.

Cardiff Site Logistics & Crane Handling

Lifting Equipment:Oversized panels require spider crane or vacuum lifter offloading.

Structural Substrate:Lift shaft steelwork must be engineered with minimal torsional deflection under moving counterweight and car live loads.

Site Tolerances:Shaft plumb line tolerances must be maintained within ±3mm over full building travel height; laser alignment mandatory.
